What are Growth Groups?

Growth Groups - The Small Group Ministry of Westwood Church

Do you want to join a growth group or do you just have questions?

See the FAQs below or contact Dave Sautner @ 230-6700 or email.

Why a Growth Group Ministry?

The Believers in the book of Acts met both in large group settings ("publicly") and in smaller group settings ("from house to house") (Acts 2:46; 5:42; 20:20). The early church knew that people grow best when they balanced the need for a large group (for celebration) and a small group (for community.) At Westwood we are working hard at helping people to come to Jesus and become like Him. We believe this happens best when people interact with others in a growth group. As our church grows larger, we must also become smaller through a growth group ministry. This will enable our church to become a healthy, living church of people growing in Christ and authentic relationships.

What is the Growth Group Ministry?

The Growth Group Ministry at Westwood is committed to helping form Christ-centered communities within the larger church community - really they're mini-churches within the big church. We realize it's easy to become a faceless number in the larger crowd during weekend services, so we believe smaller groups are key to a healthy church. Compare a small group to a lifeboat on a cruise ship. The weekend service and our church directory is made up of a lot of people you don't know, like a cruise ship. Your smaller group, however, becomes a lifeboat when times get tough, or in the middle of a demanding week. A small group creates opportunities to be known and to know others and promotes spiritual growth and Christ-centered friendship. Growth group members meet regularly in order to apply the Bible to everyday living, develop Christ-centered relationships, and encourage one another toward Christ-likeness.

Who can participate?

We encourage anyone that desires to seek God and develop authentic, healthy relationships - no matter your religious background - to join a growth group.

Who leads a growth group and where do we meet?

Growth groups are led by people from Westwood Church. Many groups meet in area homes, others at church on an evening that works best for individual group members.

Can I get in a group at any time, or do they only start at certain times?

There are current, ongoing groups that are often times are looking to include new people. Please visit the growth group brochure in the commons to find out where and when groups are meeting. Sometimes however we may need to put you on a waiting list until we are able to find a group that shares similar life-stage characteristics or start a new group with a new leader. Currently we launch new short-term groups (with the hope many will continue meeting) in the fall (october) and the winter (February). These are often the best times to begin a group.

Will I get "stuck" in a group that I don't want to be in?

No. You can start a group with no obligation to continue meeting.

How do I get started?
